Ferhat Farhat - The United States and Algeria from Roosevelt to Kennedy 1940-1962

Prix : 800 (DA) - 8 €

This book aims to trace the development of the United States Algerian relations from the cradle. It focuses on the American side with a view to assessing its approach to Algeria's quest for national independence and the creation of a new state. The study adopts the 'total history' research methodology in an attempt to achieve a comprehensive review of America's policy in Algeria with respect to its diplomatic, military and economic expressions. The American Presidents of the day beginning with F.F. Roosevelt but more so with Truman , Eisenhower and Kennedy thought of a solution that would accommodate the post-war strategy of the globally expanding American zones of influence notably NATO-marked territory like Algeria . This view , however , ran in opposite direction to the struggle of Algerian nationalists seeking to go free of old and neo-colonial schemes altogether . In essence, it was a case model of incompatible Big Power versus embryonic small state national interests.
The author belongs to the historical field and is an Americanist by training . His research interests include American Studies in general and American &ndash Arab relations in particular
